Course Description

Over the last 50 years, Asexuality and Aromanticism have grown in visibility, community, in academia, and recently surging in awareness during the continued isolation of the Covid-19 pandemic. Research suggests that 1% to 5% of the general population is Asexual, meaning there are over 70 million Asexual people around the globe (numbers for Aromanticism are unknown). As support for the validity of these orientations grows, so does the need for education and training in creating space for Asexuality and Aromanticism among clients working with sexuality professionals. In this six hour class we will explore the basics of Asexuality and Aromanticism, how to support clients in their discovery and sexual health in a society that pushes compulsory sexuality, compulsory romanticism, amatonormativity, heteronormativity, and mononormativity. We will explore how Asexual and Aromantic people can build affirming relationships, self-acceptance, and fullfilment.

Course Outcomes: At the end of this workshop participants will be able to:

  1. Define asexuality and aromanticism
  2. Recognize orientations and differentiate between HSDD / SAID and attachment disorders
  3. Assist clients in navigating self acceptance and connection to community
  4. Identify and understand the differentiated attractions that exist
  5. Establish new affirming intimacy practices that decenter sex and romance
  6. Understand the challenges due to erasure that lead to additional mental health concerns for asexual and aromantic people

About the Presenter

Aubri Lancaster (Bri/she), BA², CSE is an AASECT and ANTE UP! Certified Sexuality Educator. She began her career in 2003 as a Passion Parties consultant where she spent 16 years conducting hundreds of presentations for thousands of people. These presentations focused on arousal, intimacy, and incorporating adult toys and pleasure enhancing products into self care and relationships. As a Greyromantic Asexual, Aubri has lived experience and a connection to the Asexual and Aromantic communities that provides a unique perspective on the issues facing the changing landscape of sexuality and orientation. To better understand these connections, Aubri completed a semester studying Asexuality and Aromanticism under the guidance of Goddard Graduate Institute in 2021 and left that program to pursue AASECT certification under the supervision of Bianca Laureano, PhD, MA, CSE, CSES which she completed in 2023. Aubri has been conducting this training through ANTE UP! multiple times a year since November of 2021 and continues to expand her knowledge and sharpen her presentation so that this training continues to evolve. When not working, Aubri spends her time with her friends, her spouse, her family, her child, and her adorable Chihuahuas. Imagine statement

Imagine if we took all the best parts of what works in schools, community organizing, youth work, and justice work. What comes to mind for my bests include Freedom Schools, doula healing approaches, and justice frameworks. Add those together and put it in an education and retention framework. One that centers the whole person, physical, and ethereal parts; beyond social-emotional learning; a learning that’s guided by a justice theory. Then imagine what that could look like for adults who want something more, who are at the top of their game but struggle, who are stuck figuring out if another degree is needed or another field, people who have lost their drive for the work they are doing and want to be challenged, inspired to action again. Now imagine a learning space that brings many people all over together for a period of time to talk, build, read, learn, unlearn, and push one another to dream bigger. An expansive learning experience where we create webs of knowledge that will transcend borders. Then imagine completing a certificate that has offered you support in writing your teaching or community engagement philosophy, tighten your resume and/or CV, supports your publishing, helps you create a wellness/ self-care plan; basically ish that we all need! That’s what I want to create for all of us.

PHILOSOPHY

Guided by all the best components that have come from spaces communities created, ANTE UP! is a call to action and a guiding philosophy for who we want to be and the world we want to be a part of creating. Our curriculum uses social-emotional learning as early Freedom Schools in the US south offered, centering care and healing through common experiences and community support is what guides us in creating assessments and activities advised by a doula framework, the knowledge that there are other paths to justice not only one, and our value in media making for using the common phrase ANTE UP! to move all in for the greatest experience for all to win. We all must ANTE UP! for healing, justice, and liberation.

FRAMEWORK

The options for affordable and accessible Professional Development opportunities for adults and seasoned professionals rarely focus on long-term healing, facilitation strategies, and self-assessment for preservation. We are offering courses that act as intensive un/learning opportunities for each individual that will support us all. Our courses begin with a human rights understanding of justice and healing. We use a variety of texts to discuss and understand theory, practice, art, and community healing experiences.
